Reviews
Where my House of Hsu fans at! 😆 What are we doing wrong??????
Wife and I went to House of Hsu about 4+ years ago. Had the reputation of best in the area and she used to love eating there. We went and it was BLAH. Couple months ago people were talking this place up like crazy to a new in town looking for Chinese recommendations. Seemed that I was the only one who didn't care for it. My mom and dad have been there 2x and liked it. So we decided to try it again. Wife got her usual Gen Tso chicken and I went with shrimp fried rice and some egg drop soup. Her meal, just like ours last time is large bland tasting chicken nuggets with some dipping sauce. Egg drop soup tastes like watered down chicken broth. Kind of hard to mess up fried rice (but have had better in the mall) with tiny shrimp added. $45 down the drain. Wife could only stand about 3 nugs, I only ate a few spoons of soup. I'll be able to eat the rice, so $45 for a pint of shrimp fried rice. DONE DONE DONE, not doing that again. Mean lady in Grand Ledge it is. Good Flavor a far distant 2nd. Spoiled with Campus Kitchen in kzoo.
Atmosphere felt okay, smelled like an old house. Service was great. Order of pan-fried noodles tasted like they strained noodles and threw them back in a hot pot.. burned on the bottom, soggy on the top. The veggies tasted/looked like they were from a variety bag of Great Value frozen vegetables. Most of all, it was heavily salted, high in sodium even for Eastern food. I was sweating after eating my dish because of how much salt was in it. Girlfriend ordered Lo mein noodles - seemed more like they threw soy sauce in a pot of $0.99 Ramen. Go to the place down the road. I spent $70 at this place and got nothing but a stomachache and the salt sweats.
The food was fantastic. The hot sour soup was exactly what I was hoping for after 17 years away from Grand Ledge. The pot stickers were not over cooked, the egg roll was filled fully, and the spring rolls were proper ones. The flavours of sweet, sour, spicy, tangy, heat & savoury, fulfilled everything I wanted in a Chinese restroom. The place exceeded my expectations.
Ordered chicken with pea pods, the chicken tasted old, could not eat it. Asked for clean plate so I could share the sweet & sour chicken my friend ordered which was very good and sent mine back. Manager or whatever she was came over and made a big deal about chicken was fine and they couldn't refund my money. Finally offered to make something else but I was ready to go. Will never go back. Restaurant is dark and dingy.
Extremely disappointed. I had no idea Chinese food could even be bad. We got the Sesame Chicken and General Tso Chicken. The pieces of chicken for both were exactly the same - big/awkward and heavily breaded with a funnel cake tasting batter. The sauces came separate. They looked the same and didn't taste very different because I think they were watered down. The only decent part of our order was the hot n sour soup. 2/3 fortune cookie packages were open and stale. Do not recommend and will never go back.
This place is better than the other options around. Food is good. Dining in, the food is better. To-go seems less quality than dining in. One of the ladies, the younger lady, seems quite crabby almost every time I go there. But overall, choose this place over the other options in the area.
1st time back in 20 years. The inside is the same but the recipes have changed. Kind of bland tasting overall, but, it's very hard to find great Chinese food around mid-Michigan.
I have not been here in many years. It was as good as I remembered it always being, and looked the same. I enjoyed the nostalgic atmosphere, and the food was great. I'm a huge fan of the sizzle rice soup it's a must try.
